When people and nature thrive together, the future thrives too.
Discover our story
Equitably and sustainably work with communities to explore, identify, co-develop climate resilience for the future of our planet. This involves promoting restoration, sustainable management of land and ocean systems, fostering inclusive decision-making processes, and advocating for policies that support healthy landscapes and seascapes

Mission
The Roots of IFHD.
The India Foundation for Humanistic Development (IFHD) was born out of a deep commitment to people, equity, and sustainability. When Hivos, a Dutch development organization with a long history in India, closed its operations, two of its senior leaders — Dr. Jamuna Ramakrishnan and Ms. Reena Fernandes decided to carry its purpose forward.
In 2011, they founded IFHD in Bengaluru as a Section 8 non-profit company, with a vision to create climate-resilient futures where people and nature thrive together.

What we do ?
From the very beginning, IFHD has worked at the intersection of sustainable agriculture, biodiversity conservation, livelihoods, and social entrepreneurship.
Our approach blends science with local wisdom — co-creating solutions with communities instead of prescribing them.
Together, we design programs that :
Strengthen farmer collectives and local institutions
Restore degraded ecosystems
Foster sustainable, inclusive livelihoods
Encourage innovation in rural entrepreneurship

"I never imagined bees could change our lives,” Tara says, gently lifting the lid of her wooden hive. A year ago, she didn’t know how to manage a colony or harvest honey. Today, thanks to the IFHD and Concern India Foundation initiative supported by Thomson Reuters India (TRIPL), she manages her own apiary, part of a collective of women’s self-help groups learning to build livelihoods from nature — not at its cost.

"IFHD provided solar dryers to our SHG group and trained us on the importance of hygienic dry fish production and how this would fetch higher market prices. Today we are able to produce a good quantity and quality of dry fishes. We are able to do the packaging and marketing and get good income out of that. These solar dryers also helped us prevent the loss of dry fishes from birds, dogs, cats and predators."

"When I decided to create my own kitchen garden, the soil beneath my feet was dry and coarse but my resolve was anything but. With a little guidance from the IFHD team, I began enriching the earth, carefully mixing red and black soils and treating them with natural compost and biofertilizers. Soon, tiny seeds of spinach, coriander, okra, and ridge gourd began to sprout watered by care, patience, and a simple mini-sprinkler system. Within a few months, my family and I were eating fresh, organic vegetables grown right in our own backyard. Our weekly expenses came down, but what truly grew was something deeper: pride, better health, and a strong sense of self-reliance."
